Day 4: Day at Leisure in Tokyo

Day 5: Tokyo – Hiroshima by Shinkansen Bullet Train

Start your day with a cruise along the Sumida River, followed by an early lunch at an Indian restaurant. Then, travel to Hiroshima via the Shinkansen bullet train. Pack a small suitcase for the journey; the rest of your luggage will arrive by road in Hiroshima the next day. After checking in at your hotel, enjoy dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 6: Hiroshima Sightseeing (continued)

  • Miyajima Island/Itsukushima Shrine Visit
    Board a ferry to Miyajima Island to visit the Itsukushima Shrine, which gives the island its name. This shrine is famous for its “floating” torii gate, which offers a stunning photo opportunity against the backdrop of Mount Fuji.

After your visit, return to Hiroshima for lunch at an Indian restaurant.

  • Atomic Dome, Peace Park, and Museum
    Gain insights into Japan’s history with a visit to the Atomic Bomb Dome, originally constructed in 1915 as a shopping centre. It was largely destroyed by the atomic bomb in World War II, leaving behind its iconic dome structure. In 1966, it was preserved as a symbol of peace.

Next, visit the Peace Memorial Park, a serene space dedicated to the victims of the bombing. The park features beautifully maintained lawns and trees, providing a stark contrast to the surrounding urban area.

Conclude your day by returning to your hotel to collect your luggage, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.

Destination Nugget: Before the bombing during World War II, the area of the present-day Peace Park was a prominent commercial and political hub of the city, leading to its selection as the bombing target. It was decided four years after the bombing that the area would be preserved as a memorial.

Day 7: Hiroshima – Kyoto by Coach

Day 8: Kyoto Sightseeing

  • Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
    Visit Kinkaku-ji, the Zen Buddhist temple known for its stunning golden exterior. Originally built as the retirement villa of shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was converted into a temple according to his wishes in his will upon his death in 1408.

After your visit, enjoy lunch at an Indian restaurant.

  • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
    Explore the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, a tranquil and enchanting forest of towering bamboo stalks. For the best experience, visit on a breezy day to see the bamboo gently sway in the wind, creating a mesmerising sight.
  • Nijo Castle

Day 9: Kyoto at Leisure

Explore the culturally rich city of Kyoto at your own pace. You might visit Gion, the city’s most famous Geisha district, between Yasaka Shrine and the Kamo River. Take delight in the unique architecture of Gion’s wooden machiya merchant houses, known for their narrow façades that open up into long structures.

Day 10: Kyoto – Osaka by Coach, Sightseeing in Osaka

Day 11: Nara City Tour (continued)

  • Todai-ji Temple and Nara Park
    Visit Todai-ji Temple, one of Japan’s most significant landmarks. Walk through the impressive Nandaimon Gate and marvel at the giant Buddha statue known as Vairocana housed in the main hall, the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall). You can also interact with the friendly deer that roam freely in Nara Park, feeding them special crackers available for around 200 Yen.
  • Kofuku-ji Temple
    After lunch at an Indian restaurant, head to Kofuku-ji Temple, the family temple of Japan’s powerful Fujiwara clan. Here, you’ll find historical relics, including the five-storied pagoda, a timeless symbol of Nara, originally built in 730 CE and rebuilt in 1426 CE.

After a fascinating day exploring Nara’s historical treasures, return to Osaka for dinner and an overnight stay at your hotel.

Destination Nugget: Until recently, Todai-ji Temple held the record as the world’s largest wooden building. The current structure, from the reconstruction in 1692, is approximately two-thirds the size of the original temple hall.
